What are the types of wafer butterfly valves?

Wafer butterfly valves have been around for a long time and are used for a variety of applications. Wafer butterfly valves made their first appearance during the 1930s and have been utilized by several industries ever since. The wafer butterfly valves are often made out of cast iron. The wafer butterfly valve's name is based on the functionality of its disc.

What are the types of wafer butterfly valves?

The electric wafer butterfly valve relies on the power drive of the electric actuator to control the opening and closing of the valve. The electric wafer butterfly valve itself has no flange, and the valve body thickness is relatively thin. A set of bolts is directly passed through the bolt hole, and the electric wafer butterfly valve is clamped between the flanges at both ends of the pipeline, and then connected with bolts. Therefore, an electric wafer butterfly valve is especially suitable for working conditions where the site space is limited and the pipeline distance is relatively short. Due to the fact that the bolts will expand and cause leakage when the temperature is high, the wafer type electric butterfly valve is generally not recommended to be used in high temperature conditions.

The pneumatic wafer butterfly valve adopts the method of wafer clamping. The butterfly valve is clamped between the flanges at both ends of the pipeline, and then fixed with a set of bolts. The valve body of the pneumatic wafer butterfly valve is small in size and relatively thin in thickness. A pneumatic wafer butterfly valve is especially suitable for occasions where the distance between the two ends of the pipeline is short or the space is limited. Pneumatic wafer butterfly valves are divided into soft seals and metal seals according to different density structures. The soft seal butterfly valve is a centerline structure, which has the advantages of anti-corrosion and zero leakage, while the hard seal butterfly valve is a triple eccentric type, which has the advantages of wear-resistance and long life.

What are the differences between wafer butterfly valves and lug butterfly valves?

The difference between a wafer butterfly valve and a lug butterfly valve is only the mounting scheme. Wafer type butterfly valves do not have attachment lugs, though they may have alignment lugs. Wafer butterfly valves are sandwiched between the flanges on the ends two lengths of pipe.

The body of the wafer butterfly valve is placed between pipe flanges, and the flange bolts surround the valve body. A wafer type butterfly valve is easy to installed but it cannot be used as an isolation valve. The wafer butterfly valve usually has just two or four unthreaded holes to secure and align the valve within two mating flanges.

The lug style butterfly valve has threaded holes which allow to take off one end of the line without affecting the opposite side as it is held securely against one flange with bolts that match the threaded lugs on the valve. This makes the lug butterfly valve easier to clean, inspect, repair or replace other sections of pipework as there is no need to shut down the whole system.

What are the differences between wafer butterfly valves and flange butterfly valves?

Wafer type butterfly valves and flanged butterfly valves are two common types of butterfly valves. The scope of application of both types of butterfly valves is very wide, but many people can't tell the difference between wafer type butterfly valves and flanged butterfly valves. Wafer and flanged are two connection types of butterfly valves. In terms of price, the wafer butterfly valve is relatively cheaper.

The length of the bolt of wafer butterfly valve is longer, which requires higher construction accuracy. Under high temperature conditions, the bolts of the wafer butterfly valve may cause leakage after expansion, so it is not suitable for large diameter pipe under high temperature condition. The wafer butterfly valve cannot generally be used at the end of the pipeline and downstream needs to be disassembled. When the downstream flange is removed, the wafer butterfly valve will fall off. The flanged butterfly valve does not have the above problems, but the cost will be relatively high.

Flanged butterfly valve has flanges at both ends of the body, which are connected to the pipe flange. The sealing is relatively reliable, but the valve is relatively expensive.
